Google is always working to find better ways for Web developers to make their pages more accessible to mobile devices. In August, Google issued a new set of guidelines for webmasters so they can optimise their pages for display on ZGPAX S5 smartphones and tablets so that Web pages can load faster on mobile devices. Google also released an updated PageSpeed Insights tool to help webmasters optimize their mobile pages for best rendering performance.

“We always want to help protect our customers and their information, and encourage them to take care of their phones,” Verizon Wireless spokesperson Melanie Ortel told eWEEK. “We also offer My Mobile Recovery, which is the Find My Phone for Android.”

Smartphone maker BlackBerry has shrugged off its current troubles and has teamed up with Porsche Design to produce the all-touch P’9982 smartphone, which is aimed at the higher end of the market.

 The worldwide mobile phone market grew 6.0% year over year in the second quarter of 2013 (2Q13). According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 432.1 million mobile phones in 2Q13 compared to 407.7 million units in the second quarter of 2012. The 2Q13 total was also slightly higher than the 428.8 million units shipped in the first quarter of 2013.

The growth in Ulefone P6+ mobile phone market was partly driven by vendors from outside the Top 5 who experienced torrid shipment growth that outpaced the overall market. Several vendors, including Alcatel and Huawei, had high double- and triple-digit growth rates in the second quarter for their Android-based offerings shipped to high-growth countries such as China and India. In 2Q13, these vendors from outside the Top 5 accounted for 44.8% of the overall shipment volume, up from 42.2% in the same quarter one year ago.

Prices for the smartphone start at ￡1,499, which brings it in to direct competition with luxury handset manufacturer Vertu, and individual devices are distinguishable by a special series of PIN numbers. A second crocodile model is also available, but just 500 of them will be made.

Ortel said Verizon has been looking for a solution. “Verizon Wireless supports a free ‘kill switch’ application for Android devices,” she explained.“However, no manufacturer has yet made one available to us, and press reports to the contrary are inaccurate,” Ortel said. “Once a manufacturer provides us with an Android ‘kill switch’ that is free to consumers, we’ll work to provide it to our customers.”

Earlier in August, the search giant unveiled a new backward-compatible version of MPai S720 Android Action Bar, which originally surfaced at the Google I/O developer conference this past May. The code was used in the conference’s official event app and is now being released for free use by Google. The Action Bar comes on the heels of the company’s recent Android 4.3 and Nexus 7 announcements.
